My Square Mile

In Summer 2011 Khulisa UK, in partnership with HMP Forest Bank, launched an innovative new project that will involve prisoners and their families from the Bolton community.  Inspired by the Government’s Big Society agenda and the belief that we can all make a difference in our local community, the project will initially engage with prisoners through our Silence the Violence programme and subsequently in the community, with supporting family members, post-release.

Face It in London Schools

With 3 year funding from a private family foundation and additional funds from the Evening Standard’s Dispossessed Fund, Khulisa has been able to deliver Face It programme (the youth version of Silence the Violence) to a growing number of secondary schools, alternative education providers and community organisations in London, with an initial focus in Newham.  Challenging, experiential and fun the programme is targeted at young people displaying violent or aggressive behaviour and/or at risk of committing crime.  It is also suitable for young people who have been victims or witnesses of violence.

Young Stars

Young Stars got together for a business enterprise competition run by the Petchey Centre for Entrepreneurship at the University of East London (UEL) and Newham College, as part of Global Enterprise Week. The ‘Young Stars’ concept is based on the Olympic Ideals of Courage, Equality, Respect, Friendship and Determination - encouraging others to reject all forms of violence by bringing the voice of the vast majority of peaceful and positive young people to the fore.

Working with Catalyst In Communities, Khulisa UK, UEL and Peace One Day, the Young Stars put together a PEACE PLEDGE - launched at the Peace One Day Concert at the O2 arena on 21st September 2011.

Through Positive Peer Pressure, the Pledge unites huge numbers of Positive and Peaceful Young People, presenting a show of unity against the negative, violent minority who seem to think it’s acceptable to riot, loot and use violence / force.  This united positive stance provides safety and strength in numbers…

During the 365 day countdown to TRUCE 2012 (On Peace Day 2012), Young Stars will be recruiting in all 5 Olympic boroughs, by inviting Londoners to join together (by signing the Peace Pledge) to stand up and be counted; to show that London’s young people are a positive force for peace.
